Why is OneDrive not syncing? This is a question that troubles thousands of OneDrive users. Sometimes, Microsoft OneDrive not syncing when it says it is; OneDrive not syncing all files; OneDrive documents not syncing; OneDrive syncing folders but not files; OneDrive not syncing initial files; OneDrive not syncing between computers or across devices; sometimes, OneDrive not syncing and missing; sometimes, OneDrive just not sync after upgrading to Windows 10. No matter which situation you are in, you will find a solution below.

Solution 1. Pause, Restart, Relink, Reinstall

The easiest and most frequently tries after OneDrive on computer not syncing is to pause the program for certain time and resume it; restart the program or restart computer; unlink this PC from OneDrive and relink it back as well as reinstall OneDrive.

Solution 2. Check Account Connection

To back up from local to cloud, on the one hand, you can directly drag files to local OneDrive folder. On the other hand, you can set to automatically save items in Desktop, Documents or Pictures to OneDrive, you can go to 'Auto Save' tab in OneDrive settings and select “OneDrive” in each drop-down menu next to each folder.

You can also choose to automatically save photos and videos to OneDrive whenever you connect a camera, phone, or other devices to your PC; or, automatically save screenshots you capture to OneDrive there.

To sync from cloud to local, go to Account tab and click “Choose folders”. In the pop-up window, select the folders you want to sync back to computer. If you want them all be synced, just tick “Make all files available”.

Note: If you don’t select all items, when someone share a file to you online, it won’t be synced to local device until you choose it manually.

Solution 5. Reduce the Load of OneDrive

If OneDrive stuck for a long time without any progress, it maybe the current load of OneDrive is large. You may consider to release its burden by moving some files out of its sync folder temporarily.

1. Pause OneDrive syncing.
2. Move some files out of sync folder.
3. Resume OneDrive syncing.
4. When the sync finishes, move those files back to sync folder and they will be automatically synced to cloud.

Solution 6. Shorten File Path

Limited by Microsoft, the file path (including file name) shouldn’t exceed 400 characters. Otherwise, such file will either be backed up or synced by OneDrive, nor been recognized by OS. Even, sometimes, files with long file path won’t be synchronized successfully.

Therefore, if OneDrive some files not syncing, go to check for their file paths. If their file paths are comparatively long, try to make them shorter and resync. They should be synced normally.

Anyhow, make sure not to create long path files by making their file or folder name shorter and avoid too many subfolders.

Solution 7. Adjust File/Folder Name or Content

Make sure your files’ or folders’ names don’t contain invalid characters, such as “<, >, :, ', , ?, *, /, ”, and folders don’t contain unsupported file types.

Solution 8. Reduce File Size

OneDrive can’t sync a file that is larger than 20 GB. So, if one of your target file larger than 20 GB, it won’t be synced while showing error message like “This files is too big to upload” or “Reduce the size of this file to upload to …”. To solve such problems, just reduce the size of the file by zipping it.

Notes:

  • If it’s a picture, you have to give up its high quality if you insist on syncing it.
  • If it’s a video, you can split it into several smaller ones.

Solution 9. Keep Enough Local Storage Space

There is no longer placeholders to indicate files which are only available with Internet connection. Thus, the local device must provide storage space that is no less than the used space of your online OneDrive. Otherwise, OneDrive won’t sync files from cloud drive to local machine.

To create more free space locally, delete the items that you don’t want to keep, clear trash, or save files you don’t use frequently to other devices like external hard drives. You can also increase the space of the partition where OneDrive online files is set to sync to by free space from other partitions.

Solution 10. Dealing with Conflicting Files/Folders

Conflicts may occur when you are editing files that are under syncing, uploading multiple files on the OneDrive website at the same time, or if you made changes in your OneDrive folder on another PC that is syncing at the same time. Once conflicting items exist, rename them and try to sync once more.

Solution 11. Check Internet Connection Speed

OneDrive sync performance can be affected by your internet connection speed. You’d better to upload large or bundle of files in a better internet connection situation such as home Wi-Fi. At the same time, you’d better make sure you have chosen “Don’t limit” in Network settings tab of your OneDrive.

Solution 21. Make Sure SkyDrive.exe Is Running

1. Got to Details tab of Task Manager.
2. Find SkyDrive.exe to see whether it is running or not. If not, to run SkyDrive, click “File” on top of Task Manager window and select “Run new task” in the drop-down menu. In the pop-up window, enter “skydrive.ext” and click “OK”.

Solution 22. Make Other Programs Compatible with OneDrive

There may be some programs on your computer that is not compatible with OneDrive. So, you can use their compatible mode to solve OneDrive not automatically sync issue.

1. Find the executable file of target program in Windows Explorer (e.g. iexplorer.exe).
2. Right-click on the program and select “Properties”.
3. Click Compatibility tab and check “Enable this program to work with OneDrive files”.

Solution 23. Reset OneDrive

This should be your last resolution for this one will erase all settings you made to your OneDrive software.

1. Run command prompt as administrator.
2. Input “%localappdata%MicrosoftOneDriveonedrive.exe /reset” and press Enter.

Ensure OneDrive taskbar icon is invisible in the bottom right to verify the command order worked. Don’t forget to click the “Show hidden icons” up-arrow to check.

According to Microsoft, OneDrive taskbar icon should reappear two minutes later. If not, manually start it from Start.

1. Use the Support and Recovery Assistant for Office 365

2. Make Sure You Have Permissions to the File or Folder

1. Sign in Office 365 with your work or school account.

Solution 25. Fix OneDrive Not Syncing on Mac

Before start solving OneDrive iPad not syncing etc. problem, make sure you can access OneDrive online. For OneDrive for Business, make sure you have permissions to the file or folder you tried to sync.

If you have other items stored in OneDrive cloud but don’t sync them to Mac, you won’t see them on your machine. If you want to view them on your computer, just select them in OneDrive General settings tab.

Tips:

  • If you only sync some folders not all of them, new items you add to OneDrive from the website or other devices won’t be synchronized to your Mac computer unless they are in the folders you pick to sync.
  • You are unable to select individual files and files/folders shared to you to sync.
  • If folder syncing is stopped on Mac, the folders will be deleted from local OneDrive folder, yet, the online version will remain.

6. Check Filenames, File Size & File Path

Make sure the target files you plan to sync don’t carry filenames including illegal characters like:

Ensure that each of target file size is no larger than 20 GB. If an error message appears and says 'This file is too big to upload' or 'Reduce the size of this file to upload to...', please compress the file/folder and try to sync again.

Make sure the whole file path, including the final filename, is no longer than 400 characters. If some items failed to sync and bear comparatively long file path, you may consider to shorten their file path and retry syncing.

7. Reset OneDrive

2). Go to Applications folder to find out OneDrive.
3). Right-click on it and choose “Show packaged contents”.
4). Move to Contents/Resources folder.
5). Double click on ResetOneDriveApp.command or ResetOneDriveStandaloneApp.command to start the command order.
6). Restart OneDrive App and finish setup process.

Note: When asking you to choose location while setup, please select previous syncing location. Thus, your files won’t be downloaded again if they haven’t changed during reset.

Solution 26. OneDrive Not Syncing on Android

Before getting started, make sure your OneDrive App can connect to Internet. Some apps and features may only work with Wi-Fi according to your device settings or mobile data plan.

1. OneDrive Camera Roll Not Syncing

If your camera roll not syncing automatically, or only some images get uploaded, do as follows:

1). Check for Wi-Fi connection. If Wi-Fi is not connected, go to OneDrive settings for camera upload on metered connections and make sure it is turn on.

2. Turn off camera upload in OneDrive app settings. Go to OneDrive website and rename your Camera Roll folder. Then, turn on camera upload.

This will re-upload all your camera pictures to cloud drive; you’d better keep strong Internet connection during uploading.

2. Camera Upload Very Slow

If the camera upload of your OneDrive taking too long to set up and look for photos without any error message, it may due to you have a lot of pictures in camera roll. Just remove some photos to another place and add them back when the uploading of left photos finishes. Then, OneDrive will start uploading the re-added ones.

If OneDrive not syncing certain files saying cannot access them, then, these files might be opening currently in another application. Save changes of the files and close the program. Then, retry upload.

5. OneDrive Can’t Upload This File to This Location

This is caused by too long file path (including file name). The whole file path must count less than 442 characters. Just shorten the file path will solve OneDrive not syncing.

6. OneDrive Can’t Find This File/Folder

The target file might have been deleted, moved or renamed before you try to upload it. Try to locate it manually and re-upload.

Note: This error message may exist if you have moved the file on your computer after an automatic uploading.

7. You’re out of Storage

If your OneDrive is running out of storage and the available space size is less than the size of uploading files, the uploading will get such warning message. To upload new files, you should either buy more cloud space or clean out unwanted items from OneDrive.

8. A File with This Name Already Exists

Just rename the file you are uploading and it will be uploaded.

9. This File Contains Restricted Characters

This means that the target file’s name contains characters that is illegal:

File or folder names that are not allowed: AUX, PRN, NUL, CON, COM0, COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4, COM5, COM6, COM7, COM8, COM9, LPT0, LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, LPT4, LPT5, LPT6, LPT7, LPT8, LPT9

Note: File/folder can’t begin or end with a space; end with a period.

Solution 27. OneDrive IPhone App Not Syncing

Still, make sure your OneDrive App can connect to Internet. Some apps and features may only work with Wi-Fi according to your device settings or mobile data plan.

1. OneDrive Pictures Not Syncing

1. Keep OneDrive app open and running foreground. iOS sometimes not allow some apps working background.

  • Switch on location settings may help with camera upload. Tap “Settings – Privacy – Location service – OneDrive – Always” to turn on location.

2. Camera Roll Takes Too Long

2. Switch off “Optimize Storage” in iOS photo & picture settings.
3. Let OneDrive running overnight and take its time.

Tip: Signing out or reinstallation is not recommended for they will only cause the process to begin again.

Apple adopt new image and video formats in iOS 11 that are not compatible with common devices and services. Thus, to keep up with iOS, please keep OneDrive app up-to-date by enabling Background App Refresh in OneDrive general settings.

Also, you can on the other hand turn videos back to standard format by select “Most Compatible” in iOS “Settings – Camera – Formats”.

There are two basic ways that you, as an administrator, can deploy the OneDrive sync app to Mac users in your organization:

  • Install and set up the OneDrive sync app by following the instructions in Sync files with OneDrive on macOS. To install the OneDrive sync app for Mac, a user has to be an administrator on the Mac or know an administrator account name and password.

  • Download the installer package file to your local network, and then use your software distribution tools to deploy the app to your users. By using a software distribution tool, you have more control over the deployment, including which users get the sync app and when. The OneDrive sync app for Mac uses the Apple Installer technology for installation allowing you to use the software distribution tools that you normally use to deploy software to Mac users. You can use Microsoft Intune. Other common tools are Jamf Pro, Munki, and AutoPkg. You can also use Apple Remote Desktop and AppleScript.

Manage OneDrive settings on macOS using property list (.plist) files

After the OneDrive sync app for Mac is installed, users can configure settings for the app. These settings are called preferences. As an administrator, you might want to provide users in your organization with a standard set of preferences. Preferences for the OneDrive sync app for Mac are stored in property list (.plist) files.

Configure sync app settings

Configure the settings on macOS as follows:

  1. Quit the OneDrive app.

  2. Define the settings you want to change by creating a .plist file with the values. You can also use a script to set the default values.

  3. Deploy the settings onto the local computer.

  4. Refresh the preferences cache.

    On the next start of OneDrive, the new settings will be picked up.

Overview of settings

Use the following keys to preconfigure or change settings for your users. The keys are the same whether you run the standalone or Mac App Store edition of the sync app. However, the .plist file name and domain name will be different. When you apply the settings, ensure that you target the appropriate domain depending on the edition of the sync app.

List of settings

AllowTenantList

This setting prevents the users from uploading files to other organizations by specifying a list of allowed tenant IDs. If you enable this setting, the user gets an error if they attempt to add an account from an organization that isn't in the allowed tenants list. If the user has already added the account, the files stop syncing. This setting takes priority over Block syncing OneDrive accounts for specific organizations setting. Do NOT enable both settings at the same time.

The parameter for the AllowTenantList key is TenantID and its value is a string, which determines the tenants for whom the Allow Tenant setting is applicable. For the setting to be complete, this parameter also requires a boolean value to be set to it. If the boolean value is set to True, the tenant is allowed to sync.

The example for this setting in the .plist file is:

AutomaticUploadBandwidthPercentage

This setting enables the sync app to automatically set the amount of bandwidth that can be used for uploading files, based on available bandwidth.

To enable this setting, you must define a number between 1 and 99 that determines the percentage of bandwidth the sync app can use out of the total available bandwidth.

The example for this setting in the .plist file is:

BlockExternalSync

This setting prevents the sync app from syncing libraries and folders shared from other organizations.

Set the setting's value to True, to prevent the users from syncing OneDrive, SharePoint libraries, and folders with organizations other than the user's own organization. Set the value to False or don't enable the setting to allow the OneDrive, and SharePoint files to be synced with other organizations also.

The example for this setting in the .plist file is:

BlockTenantList

This setting prevents the users from uploading files to organizations that are included in the blocked tenant IDs list.

If you enable this setting, the users get an error if they attempt to add an account from an organization that is blocked. If a user has already added an account for a blocked organization, the files stop syncing. This setting does NOT work if you have Allow syncing OneDrive accounts for only specific organizations setting enabled. Do NOT enable both settings at the same time.

Enable this setting by defining IDs for the TenantID parameter, which determines the tenants to whom the block tenant setting is applicable. Also set the boolean value to True for the ID of every tenant you want to prevent from syncing with the OneDrive and SharePoint files and folders.

Note

In the list, inclusion of the tenant ID alone doesn't suffice. It's mandatory to set the boolean value to True for the ID of each tenant who is to be blocked.

DefaultFolderLocation

This setting specifies the default location of the OneDrive folder for each organization.

The parameters are TenantID and DefaultFolderPath.The TenantID value is a string that determines the tenants to whom the default folder location setting is applicable.The DefaultFolderPath value is a string that specifies the default location of the folder.

The following are the conditions governing the default folder location:-Mac app store: The path must already exist when the user is setting up the sync app.-Standalone: The path will be created (if it doesn't already exist) after the user sets up the sync app. Only with the Standalone sync app you can prevent users from changing the location.

DisableHydrationToast

This setting prevents toasts from appearing when applications cause file contents to be downloaded.

If you set the setting's value to True, toasts do not appear when applications trigger the download of file contents.

DisablePersonalSync

This setting blocks user from signing in and syncing files in personal OneDrive accounts. If this setting has been configured after a user has set up sync with a personal account, the user gets signed out.

If you set the setting's value to True, the users are prevented from adding or syncing personal accounts.

EnableAllOcsiClients

This setting lets multiple users use the Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise, Office 2019, or Office 2016 desktop apps to simultaneously edit an Office file stored in OneDrive. It also lets users share files from the Office desktop apps.

Important

We recommend keeping this setting enabled to make syncing faster and reduce network bandwidth. See all our recommendations for configuring the sync app.

If you set this setting to True or don't set this setting, the Office tab appears in OneDrive sync preferences, and Use Office applications to sync Office files that I open is selected, by default.

If you set this setting to False, the Office tab is hidden in the sync app, and co-authoring and in-app sharing for Office files are disabled. The User can choose how to handle Office files in conflict setting acts as disabled, and when file conflicts occur, both copies of the file are kept. For more information about the settings in the sync app, see Use Office applications to sync Office files that I open.

EnableODIgnore

This setting lets you enter keywords to prevent the OneDrive sync app from uploading certain files to OneDrive or SharePoint. You can enter complete names, such as 'setup.exe' or use the asterisk (*) as a wildcard character to represent a series of characters, such as *.pst. Keywords aren't case-sensitive.

If you enable this setting, the sync app doesn't upload new files that match the keywords you specified. No errors appear for the skipped files, and the files remain in the local OneDrive folder. In Finder, the files appear with an 'Excluded from sync' icon.

FilesOnDemandEnabled

This setting specifies whether Files On-Demand is enabled.

If you don't set this setting, Files On-Demand will be enabled automatically as we roll out the feature, and users can turn the setting on or off.

If you set this setting to True, FilesOnDemand is enabled and the users who set up the sync app can view the online-only files, by default.

If you set this setting to False, FilesOnDemand is disabled and the users won't be able to turn it on.

HideDockIcon

This setting specifies whether a dock icon for OneDrive is shown.

If you set this setting's value to True, the OneDrive dock icon is hidden even if the app is running.

HydrationDisallowedApps

This setting prevents apps from automatically downloading online-only files. You can use this setting to lock down apps that don't work correctly with your deployment of Files On-Demand.

To enable this setting, you must define a string in JSON format as described below:

'appID' can be either the BSD process name or the bundle display name. 'MaxBuildVersion' denotes the maximum build version of the app that will be blocked. 'MaxBundleVersion' denotes the maximum bundle version of the app that will be blocked.

This setting specifies whether OneDrive starts automatically when the user logs in.

SharePointOnPremFrontDoorUrl

This setting specifies the SharePoint Server 2019 on-premises URL that the OneDrive sync app must try to authenticate and sync against.

To enable this setting, you must define a string containing the URL of the on-premises SharePoint Server.

SharePointOnPremPrioritizationPolicy

This setting determines whether or not the client should set up sync for SharePoint Server or SharePoint in Microsoft 365 first during the first-run scenario when the email is the same for both SharePoint Server on-premises and SharePoint in Microsoft 365 in a hybrid scenario.

If you set this setting's value to 1, it is an indication that OneDrive should set up SharePoint Server on-premises first, followed by SharePoint in Microsoft 365.

SharePointOnPremTenantName

This setting enables you to specify the name of the folder created for syncing the SharePoint Server 2019 files specified in the Front Door URL.

If this setting is enabled, you can specify a TenantName that is the name the folder will use in the following convention:
OneDrive – TenantName (specified by you)
TenantName (specified by you)

If you do not specify any TenantName, the folder will use the first segment of the FrontDoorURL as its name. For example, https://Contoso.SharePoint.com will use Contoso as the Tenant Name in the following convention:

Tier

This setting lets you specify the ring for users in your organization. The OneDrive sync app updates to the public through three rings; first to Insiders, then to Production, and finally to Deferred. When you enable this setting and select a ring, users aren't able to change it.

Insiders: The Insiders ring users receive builds that let them preview new features coming to OneDrive.

Production: The Production ring users get the latest features as they become available. This ring is the default.

Enterprise (now called 'Deferred'): The Deferred ring users get new features, bug fixes, and performance improvements last. This ring lets you deploy updates from an internal network location, and control the timing of the deployment (within a 60-day window).

Important

We recommend selecting several people in your IT department as early adopters to join the Insiders ring and receive features early. We also recommend leaving everyone else in the organization in the default Production ring to ensure they receive bug fixes and new features in a timely fashion.
